1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar — Carson City Mint

Extremely Fine (XF)

Struck in 1883 at the Carson City Mint, this Morgan Silver Dollar comes from a mint that has become inseparable from the story of the American West. Operating on a much smaller scale than Philadelphia or San Francisco, Carson City struck coins primarily from locally mined Comstock Lode silver, giving its output a character all its own.

By the time this coin was produced, the frontier days of Nevada were already beginning to fade. Railroads had arrived, silver booms were cooling, and the Carson City Mint was nearing the final decades of its operation. Many of the coins struck here saw real use in commerce, moving through banks, saloons, and businesses across the West rather than being set aside at the time of issue.

This example grades Extremely Fine (XF), showing moderate, even wear that confirms it circulated while still retaining strong design detail. Liberty’s hair and facial features remain clear, and the eagle on the reverse shows solid feather definition for the grade. The surfaces reflect honest wear rather than damage, giving the coin the look collectors expect from a well-preserved circulated Carson City dollar.

Carson City Morgans are widely collected not because they are rare in an absolute sense, but because they connect directly to a specific place and moment in U.S. history. An XF example like this offers that connection with visible character—clearly circulated, clearly original, and unmistakably from the Old West.
