1881-O Morgan Silver Dollar — New Orleans Mint
About Uncirculated (AU)
The 1881-O Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint, a branch mint that supplied silver coinage to the South and the Mississippi Valley during the post–Civil War era. New Orleans dollars were produced for circulation and regularly entered everyday commerce.
By the early 1880s, Morgan dollars from the New Orleans Mint were moving through banks, river trade, and local businesses. Many saw extended use, while others circulated only briefly before being set aside, creating a wide range of surviving conditions.
This example grades About Uncirculated (AU), showing only light wear on the highest points of the design. Most of the original detail remains, with strong definition in Liberty’s hair and clear feather detail on the reverse eagle. Traces of original mint luster are often still visible in the protected areas.
An AU 1881-O offers a middle ground between fully Mint State examples and more heavily circulated coins. It retains much of the coin’s original sharpness while still showing signs of real use, making it appealing to collectors who value both detail and history.
