Commemorative Coins

U.S. commemorative coins are extremely popular among collectors. These special coins are authorized by Congress to pay homage to remarkable events, people, places and institutions in American history.

  • Commemorative coins typically are issued for a single year and at smaller mintages, and are usually only available for a limited time. Although they are legal tender, they are not minted for general circulation.
  • When purchased directly from the U.S. Mint, commemorative coins also serve the purpose of raising money for important causes. In the case of newly minted coins, part of the original purchase price is donated to causes and projects that benefit the community. These include new museums, national monument maintenance, preservation of historical sites, and more.
